Hotohori is the kind and gentle-natured Emporer of Konan. Being raised in the palace for 18 years, he has never had friends and possesses a deep loneliness as a result. From childhood, his only comfort was being told that a girl from another world would come to Konan one day, and she would be the Suzaku no Miko. Hotohori knew that, one day, this girl would fill the void in his life and bring happiness and peace to Konan.

Hotohori is the young emperor of Konan Country which he rules fairly and justly. As both of his parents are deceased, his advisors take care of his every need. Hotohori had been told of "Suzaku no Miko" when he was a small child and has yearned to love that woman who would be "Suzaku no Miko". He has an uncanny way of admiring himself and is quite the narcissist. Hotohori finds himself also in love with Miaka and tries to win her, but finds that the love between Tamahome and Miaka is much stronger.
